Open Question: What would happen to America if it elected an islamic radical for President?
Would the President admit he was muslim or claim he was Christian?
Would the President do things to help the US economy, or plunge it as far into debt as he could to ensure maximum problems for the future?
Would the President promote businesses, innovation, and work ethic, or tax the he11 out businesses and those that work while making empty promises to the foolish and lazy?
Would he address important issues that could help America’s economy or make his first order of business to close prisons and free those who have sought to murder American’s and cause terror in the world?
What do you think would happen?
Resolved Question: Can the Republican coalition make a comeback?
The primary blocks of the republican coalition are social conservative on the religious right, fiscal conservatives, and neocons who support American military imperialism around the globe.
The costs of maintaining a military empire financed by debt is clearly not fiscally conservative and tends to lead to policies that are in conflict with traditional Christian values, such as torture and the direct financing of anti christian regimes such as the US supported governments in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Fiscal conservatism when taken to it’s current extreme of opposing almost all regulation tends to produce a culture of greed where money is pursued and worshiped like a God. This is also in conflict with traditional christian values.
Meanwhile social conservatism is often intolerant of those in our society who hold values different from it’s own. Any growing society always increases in diversity which leads to a breakdown of any ideology that requires exclusion in order to survive. At some point, as in most of the modern world today, the ideology simply excludes to many members of the society in which it exists and as such becomes increasingly irrelevant. This is fundamentally at odds with capitalism which requires constant growth and is why big business republicans tend to be more aligned with liberals on social issues.
Given all these internal contradictions and many more within the Republican coalition, who can put Humptey Dumptey back together again?
