Open Question: Is the Commodity Futures Modernization Act , that legitimized collateralized debt obligations (CDOs) the major?
cause of the current economic situation?

The mortgage default rate, those facing foreclosure or more than 30 days behind, is less than 10% of all mortgages. This alone could not conceivably cause the current situation. CDO’s are basically ‘protection’ or insurance purchased by financial institutions to protect them from loss if the packaged derivatives go into default. They are bought with a defined length of time, usually five years. Problem is that because of the risky loans packaged in these derivatives as well as good mortgages, credit card debt, student loans, when one fails the entire derivative loses value. By plunking down millions of dollars, a hedge fund or investment bank could reap billions once these fatally constructed securities plunged. Again, the funds did not need to own the securities; they just needed to pay for the derivatives—the insurance policies for the securities. And they could pay for them again and again. This was known as replicating.
At almost $600 trillion, over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives dwarf the value of publicly traded equities on world exchanges, which totaled $62.5 trillion in the fall of 2007 and fell to $36.6 trillion a year later.

So we should thank Alan Greenspan, former Chairman of the Federal Reserve, Robert Rubin, Treasury Secretary in the Clinton administration, his deputy, Lawrence Summers, Bill Clinton for signing the Commodity Futures Modernization Act into law and the 106th Congress for passing the act?
Should we have heeded the warnings of Brooksley Born, who headed the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) at the time and Warren Buffett who warned of the ultimate collapse, calling these ‘financial weapons of mass destruction?
grob, I did include the entire 106th Congress of which Gramm was a part.

Open Question: Worried about baby coming and finances?
I’ve been stressing out for the last week about how to get everything in order in time for the baby to get here…

My husband and I don’t have THAT much credit card debt (about 750 dollars) but I also owe my aunt 1500. She said we can start paying her in August at 50 dollars a month.

I don’t know how we’re going to be able to handle that when the time comes. It’s been hard enough for us to put money away as it is, since we live in San Diego and our rent is very high. We also have a very high car payment, and high car insurance because we are both under 25.

I know the stressing isn’t good, but I also don’t know how to stop it. For those of you with a limited budget, how do you make everything work?

(I DO have insurance that will cover all my medical bills when the baby is born)
My husband works full time already and I go to college. My mom has offered to watch the baby 2 days a week if I stay in school.

He picks up some freelance work here and there (website and graphic design) and that’s where most of our small savings comes from. I just keep trying to find ways to cut sown on our bills because I feel like we’ve over extended ourselves.

Open Question: Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Ohio?
My husband and I need to file bankruptcy as soon as possible before garnishment starts. I have quite a few questions regarding filing though. I know we need an attorney, and I have spoke to some people who have filed, and prices varied, A LOT! What is the average price for filing (My husband and I both need to file, with about $30,000 in debts). Also, we will be filing on 4 repossessions, medical bills, utility bills, credit cards, and cell phone contracts. We have a loan right now that we have been current on, which is our only vehicle, but we used our mobile home as collateral to secure the loan. We do NOT want to file bankruptcy on this loan, but pretty much everything else. Is that an option? I am completely clueless about this and need some general help before going through with it. Thank you much!
