Resolved Question: Do credit card companies accept goodwill payments?
My husband and I were working towards becoming debt free following Dave Ramsey’s plan and in Feb he got in a car accident and lost his job.
I make a decent salary so I’m paying all our major expenses and we cut everything unimportant (cable, internet, restaurants, etc). I also do calligraphy at night & weekends for extra money.
We had quite a bit of credit card debt that we racked up in college. We are not using the cards anymore and have been living 100% cash for the past 3 years.
I simply cannot pay the minimum payments (after August 2009) until my husband gets another full-time job. He is applying everywhere and we are selling things and working odd jobs to make up the difference and trying not to use any savings for as long as possible.
We also have medical debt that his insurance company denied and we are paying a little on that to keep it current. Our lawsuit will probably settle that so I’m not worried too much about it.
We have applied for unemployment but it is still processing. Not sure what is going on with that but it is supposed to be $200 per week.
Will credit card companies work out a goodwill payment until we get back on our feet? I’ve never had a late payment in my life. I just want to try to pay $20/card/month to show that I’m willing to continue paying my debt.
I have a baby on the way and I have no idea how expensive this is going to be.
Do consumer credit counselors work? I hear a lot of people jaded by them and say it is better to file Chapter 13 bankruptcy and work out a payment plan.
I’m sure it can’t be much longer before husband finds another job but I want to prepare for the worst.
Thanks in advance!
Resolved Question: Tell me about NACA…..?
I know what they offer & what you have to do. However, my husband had (has) bad credit….530 actually. BUT we’ve paid ALL of his debt back in Feb & Apr this year & just waiting for it to climb back up. We’ve been told they don’t look at credit but debt/income ratio.
So I’m wondering what these “counselors” w/NACA are going to tell us to do. We even took out a $300 credit card to help raise it even more.
Also, what did you have to come up with exactly at closing?
Thanks for your advice!
