Open Question: Why are many on the left so happy about the Stock Market plunge?
I read “questions” here daily from devote leftist that are filled with glee about the plunging stock market while they shout “it is about time the rich get theirs and lose their money in the market”.

Question:

Don’t you liberals understand that the stock market is a pool of money that funds companies and their future growth? People make money on the companies and markets success and that’s where profits come from. Do you not understand that almost all invested in the market are the working and middle class? This is people’s pension funds, 401 K retirement funds and kid’s college funds?

How can some people be so happy to see these hard working Americans lose their future?

Open Question: Financial advice ref my brokerage account?
I received a phone call today from my broker referenced my accounts. He had an internal memo from their management suggesting that they talk to all of their clients who held these accounts be transferred to other accounts. Appearently the new money manager is doing a lot of derivitives and they have some concerns because of this.
My account is in 2 different funds. He wants to transfer the bad one into the other account that he likes.
My question is: Due to the economic climate, selling and transfer over into a new or existing accounts could be costly. He claims the same amount is transferred, but of course there will be fees etc that i cant see and most likely my account will be worth a lot less. I was thinking of possibly transferring over a percentage into the money market or all of it till things start to even out. As all of us know, the market keeps dropping and am afraid in couple of years will be almost gone.
sidenote; i am 56; my husband is 64 and will be retiring w/in a year.
I have specifically not listed the fund name. My account is with one of the biggest brokerage account.
If others have received phone calls from this company, they will know what i am talking about.
I have no clue what to do. Believe my broker trying to do the best for us, but then again, there maybe a conflict of interest.
Any suggestions?
Adding this info.
My broker has many preferred funds.
If all is transferred to the other account, (Lord Abbott) the brokerage would get more asset fees, since the total would be more than I currently have. ie: 10k that now is 20k;
When my father died, he had over $155k in all of the telecommunications stocks that I kept for 2 years before finally selling and transferring over to this firm. I had lost over 85K during that time. I thought since 7 different companies, would be ok, not like enron where everyone held just the enron only.
So in effect, by transferring everything over to Lord Abbot would be the same? That maybe having the transfer to other preferred companies might transfer my risk?
Hopefully this question makes sense.
addtl info.
it is not oppenheimer that is in dispute. i am not saying company since dont want some people to read and lower price with panic until merged.
i will take your suggestion and see about getting a 2nd opinion.
my husband is self employed and i am currently unemployed, so money is tight right now, like it is for a lot of people.

Open Question: Is it wise for me to use leverage to purchase dividend paying stocks?
Is this the time, between now and say summer, for the average investor to
borrow money to purchase buy and hold stocks? A basket of normally expensive blue
chip type stocks that have high dividend yields and are thought to be value
priced in this current market?.

These stocks are expensive to buy for investors like me who invest using a
portion of our paycheque. We are forced to purchase index funds/mutual
funds until our wealth is high enough that we can justify paying brokerage
and trading fees for ETF’s or individual stocks. Perhaps now is a time to
consider borrowing money to purchase long-term buy and hold dividend
yielding stocks because the dividend yields and potential share price
increase will erase the cost of the transaction fees.

Here are my thoughts:

-Yes dividends are not considered safe until they are PAID but once paid for
me they are taxed at 25% of my normal income tax rate (Cash interest is
taxed at the full rate for example)..

-Assuming (in Canada) the interest owing on borrowed money used to fund
equities purchases is tax deductable.

-Or else I can borrow money to contribute to a Retirement tax shelter (RRSP)
and instead of claiming interest as a tax deduction, I would get a automatic
reduction of income taxes owing. In my case it’ll be 34% of the amount I
contribute to the retirement shelter.

-As a personal creed I never borrow money unless I have an equal amount
available to pay off that debt.

Now this may not be a course of action for myself but what about others? Is
leverage recommended for the little long term investor?
